The loud sound you just heard when you opened up this page was me sighing from the Bruins press conference that was held yesterday. Some of the stuff that was said has me shaking my head so hard that my neck is beginning to hurt. Being a Bruins fan, I don't think I could hang my head any lower. The dedication to win a Stanley Cup with this franchise is really beginning to worry me.
"Since I've been here we've had a plan to inject younger players into the line-up, but our objective is to win a Cup." - Peter Chiarelli
Okay, I had to stop the feed on the Bruins website once I heard this. If the objective is to win a Stanley Cup, then why is it that Chiarelli and friends (sounds like a sitcom) haven't made the moves to address needs on this team. Scoring was a need last season and it was never addressed. There are guys on this roster who are earning a big chunk of change that don't deserve it (see: Tim Thomas, Patrice Bergeron, Marco Sturm, Michael Ryder) so why weren't they moved for a better piece? Bergeron and Thomas certainly have some trade value yet the only thing I heard was that Ryder was being shopped around. Also, if the Bruins objective is to win a Cup, why didn't they make a serious run at Kovalchuk? In 27 games with the Devils, Kovalchuk had 10 goals and 17 assists.
In exchange for Kovalchuk, the Thrashers get rookie forward Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round pick in this year's draft. So essentially, the Bruins could've put a package together of Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ference/Mark Stuart/Derek Morris, a prospect and the #17 pick and moved it to Atlanta for Kovalchuk. I don't see why Boston never pulled the trigger on this deal.
If the objective is to win the Stanley Cup, then why didn't they make the moves that show it?
"In the last two years, I don't want to highlight the fact, but in the last two years we're one of fives teams to have been in the second round both years." - Chiarelli
First of all Pete, you did highlight the fact. If you didn't want to highlight the issue, you wouldn't have brought it up. These words should have never bypassed the filter between the brain and the mouth. What does this statement tell you, Mr. or Ms. Bruins fan? You know what it tells me? It tells me that the Bruins are not focused on winning the Stanley Cup, but merely focused on making the playoffs. Peter, I'm glad that you're content on making the second round two years in a row, but what does that offer to Bruins fans? Are we supposed to be happy that this team has made the second round twice in two years and then lost both times? Where is the solace in that?
I'm pretty sure I can't go to my friend Andy (Flyers fan, good dude) and say "Hey brah, you may have come back from a 0-3 hole to win the series 4-3, but at least we've made the second round twice in two years!" Not only will he laugh me out of any building, but I'm pretty sure he'll stop being my friend because of the inane bullshit spewing from my noise hole. There is no way any Bruins fan can take solace in that sentence Peter.
I'm sure Ray Shero (a Stanley Cup winning GM) is going to come out and say "You know, we may have lost to Montreal in Round 2 when we were the heavy favorites, but we've been to the second round in three years." I'm sure of it.
"I'm not going to be looking into the Free Agent market, but there are other ways to facilitate change, either through the trade market or by bringing up prospects." - Chiarelli
SHUT. UP. Okay Bruins fans, I think I'm going to lose my shit in a few minutes. The Bruins need change, but Chiarelli isn't going to look at the free agent market? Why not? I'm sure a guy like Kovalchuk could help the squad (cap issues not withstanding) put some pucks in the net. Instead of opening up cap space, Chiarelli has made some really bad contracts moves this season which include Milan Lucic (3 years, $12.25M) and Andrew Ference (3 years, $6.75M). This doesn't includes Thomas' hefty contract either, which has a no-movement clause. Chiarelli did do some positives this season like signing Savard to a great contract and extending Tuukka Rask on the cheap, but he also failed at the trade deadline to acquire the scorer and instead got defensive help. When the defense and PK is tops in the league, why add to it? Hopefully the Bruins don't **** this up by letting Seidenberg get away.
These are just a few lines from the press conference held yesterday by Bruins management. I can honestly say that I have no faith in Peter Chiarelli anymore. From the moves I've seen over the past two seasons to the things he says, it makes me feel as though he is just a puppet for Jacobs. What do you guys think?
